Red and dark marks after spots: what are they and how long do they last?

Tube zonnebrand en een handspiegel op zandkleurig linnen met olijftakjes

Short answer: most marks left after a spot aren't scars. A red or pink mark comes from tiny blood vessels that are still active after the inflammation. A brown or dark mark comes from extra pigment. Both usually fade on their own, but it takes time: often weeks to months for red marks, and sometimes months to more than a year for dark marks. Sunscreen, leaving spots alone and giving your skin the right nutrients each day can support its recovery.

The spot is gone, but something's left behind. A red mark or a brown patch, right where it was. And if you've had a lot of spots, you might now have a lot of marks. Sometimes they bother you more than the spots themselves. The good news: most of these marks aren't permanent. Here's what they are, how long they usually last and what you can do to help your skin.

At a glance

  • Red or pink marks come from blood vessels; dark marks come from extra pigment.
  • Neither is usually a scar. Both fade on their own, though it can take months.
  • If you have medium or dark skin, you're more likely to get dark marks.
  • Sun exposure makes dark marks darker, so sunscreen is the most important step.
  • Your skin repairs itself. You can help by leaving it alone, protecting it and giving it the right nutrients.

Why spots leave marks

A spot is a small area of inflammation in your skin. Your body sends extra blood to the area to clear it up. Your skin also responds to the irritation by making more pigment. Pigment gives your skin its colour and is what makes you tan in the sun. When the spot goes, those responses don't stop straight away. What you see is no longer a spot, but the aftermath in your skin.

The bigger and deeper a spot was, and the longer it lasted, the more likely it is to leave a mark. Squeezing and picking make marks more likely too. They cause extra damage, leaving your skin with more to repair.

Red, brown or a scar: how can you tell?

Not all marks are the same. Knowing what you're looking at helps you understand how long it might last and what you can do.

Red or pink marks
Caused by tiny blood vessels that remain widened after inflammation. They're most noticeable on lighter skin and often fade within weeks to a few months.
Brown or dark marks
Caused by extra pigment. They're more common on medium or dark skin and often fade over several months, though it can take more than a year.
Scars
A dip or indentation in your skin, or a raised bump. The structure of your skin has changed, and it won't fade on its own.

Doctors have names for them too. Red marks are called post-inflammatory erythema. Brown marks are called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. “Post-inflammatory” simply means after inflammation.

The pressure test

Not sure if a mark is red or brown? Press it gently with your finger or a small glass. Does it briefly get lighter, then return to its original colour? It's probably red and caused by blood vessels. If the colour stays the same, it's probably pigment.

Can you feel a dip?

Run your finger over your skin, or look in the mirror from the side with light coming from one direction. If you can see or feel an indentation, it's a scar. If your skin feels smooth and only the colour is different, it's a mark. The difference matters because scars need a different approach.

How long does a mark last?

It's the question everyone asks. The honest answer: longer than you'd like, but not as long as you might fear.

Your skin is constantly renewing itself. In younger people, the outer layer is completely replaced in about four weeks. That process takes longer as you get older. With each cycle, some of the extra pigment moves towards the surface and is shed. The blood vessels beneath a red mark gradually settle down too.

So a mark doesn't disappear overnight. It fades little by little. You might not notice a difference day to day. But compare a photo taken now with one taken three months from now, and you may see more change than you expected.

Things that can slow the process down:

  • Sun exposure. UV light stimulates your pigment cells, making brown marks darker and longer-lasting.
  • New spots. As long as new spots keep appearing, new marks can appear too.
  • Squeezing and picking. Every time you pick at a spot, you set its recovery back.
  • Overly harsh products. Scrubs and strong acids can irritate your skin, and irritation can lead to more pigment.

What you can do

You can't make a mark vanish. But you can give your skin the best conditions to recover. These are the steps that make the biggest difference:

  • Wear sunscreen every day. Even when it's cloudy, and even in winter. Choose an oil-free SPF 30 or higher. This is the most important step for dark marks.
  • Leave your spots alone. Less damage means fewer marks. Find it hard not to pick? A pimple patch can help by keeping your fingers away from the spot.
  • Keep your routine gentle. A gentle cleanser, a light moisturiser and sunscreen. No scrubs or ten active products at once.
  • Focus on fewer new spots. That's the best way to prevent new marks. Clearer skin leaves fewer traces behind.
  • Be patient, and take photos. Take one photo a month in the same light. It can help you see the fading you might miss day to day.

Skincare products containing niacinamide, azelaic acid or vitamin C may also help your skin. If you're unsure what's right for you, ask your GP or a skin specialist. Start with one product at a time so you can see how your skin responds.

Your skin recovers from within

Recovery doesn't just happen at the surface. Beneath the outer layer is your dermis. It contains collagen, a protein that gives your skin firmness and structure. After inflammation, your skin needs to recover there too, and your body needs nutrients to do that.

Some of those nutrients are:

  • Vitamin C. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. Your body can't make vitamin C itself or store it well, so you need it every day.
  • Zinc. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin.
  • Copper. Copper contributes to normal skin pigmentation.
  • Protein. Collagen is made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Your body gets them from food.

You get some of these nutrients from your diet. Vitamin C is found in fruit and vegetables such as peppers, kiwi fruit, oranges and broccoli. Zinc is found in meat, fish, cheese, wholegrains and nuts. If you eat a varied diet, you're already getting plenty. But not everyone eats that way every day, and a supplement can be an easy addition.

I'm 40, … And because I have hyperpigmentation, every spot leaves a mark straight away. I'm one month into my new routine now. Every morning I have a glass of water with one scoop of Glow+, then breakfast followed by Clear+. My skin is calmer, and of course the marks need more time. If another spot appears, I use the Clear Dots straight away. I think they're magic. And this week I went out without make-up twice.

Neeltje · 16 May 2026

Neeltje's experience shows it well: her skin became calmer first, while the marks need more time. That's usually how it goes.

Where Glow+ fits in

Glow+ is our collagen drink for adults. It's made to give your skin nutrients for its structure every day. Each scoop contains:

  • 8,000 mg hydrolysed type I bovine collagen
  • 500 mg vitamin C
  • 4.5 mg zinc
  • 1,500 mg MSM, 500 mg gotu kola and 100 mg hyaluronic acid

Mix one scoop into 250 ml of water. It has a Strawberry Watermelon flavour. Glow+ doesn't promise to make marks disappear. What it does is give your skin nutrients each day for its own repair processes. Marks fade at your skin's pace, and that means months, not days. That's why Glow+ works best when you take it every day and keep taking it.

Still getting new spots regularly? Many customers combine Glow+ with Clear+, just like Neeltje. Clear+ is focused on clearer skin and contains zinc, vitamin A and copper, among other ingredients. Glow+ is focused on your skin's structure. Clear+ contains 20 mg of zinc, so Glow+ deliberately contains only a small amount. Stick to the daily dose of each, and don't take another supplement containing zinc, such as a multivitamin. Read how to combine them in Using Clear+ and Glow+ together.

If it's your first time ordering Glow+, you have a 90-day satisfaction guarantee. Take it every day for 90 days. If you're not satisfied after that, let us know between day 90 and day 100 and return all the pouches. You'll get your purchase price back, minus the cost of the return label.

What about scars?

If you can feel dips or indentations in your skin, you have scars. The structure of your skin has changed, and it won't repair itself on its own. A supplement or cream won't do much to change that. If you'd like to explore treatment, a dermatologist or skin specialist can talk you through options such as laser treatment, microneedling or a peel. Ask your GP for a referral if you're unsure.

The most important thing with scars is prevention. And that comes back to the same two things: fewer spots, and leaving them alone.

When to see your GP

Make an appointment with your GP if:

  • you're developing indentations or scars;
  • you have lots of painful, deep spots that keep leaving marks;
  • you're getting dark patches where there wasn't a spot, such as on your forehead or upper lip;
  • a mark changes shape, colour or size, or starts itching or bleeding;
  • it's seriously affecting your confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Do red marks after spots go away on their own?

Usually, yes. Red marks come from blood vessels that remain widened after inflammation. They gradually settle down, often within weeks to a few months. Sun exposure and squeezing spots can make it take longer.

How long do dark marks after spots last?

Often a few months, but sometimes more than a year. It depends on how deep the pigment is and your skin tone. Wear sunscreen every day, because sun exposure makes the marks darker.

Are marks after spots scars?

Usually not. A mark is a change in colour, but the skin feels smooth. A scar is an indentation or a bump in your skin. If you can feel a dip, it's a scar.

Does collagen help with marks?

Collagen is a building block for your skin's structure. It won't make marks disappear, but it gives your skin material for its own repair processes. Your body also needs vitamin C to make collagen. Patience still matters: marks fade at your skin's pace.

Is Glow+ suitable for teenagers?

No, Glow+ is for adults. Clear+ is available for teenagers aged 12 and over.

What if I'm not satisfied?

You'll get your money back. For your first order, take Glow+ every day for 90 days, then contact us between day 90 and day 100. You'll find all the terms in our refund policy.
